2024 US Mint Product Release Details: 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin (24YG)
What we know so far about the 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin (24YG):
On November 28, 2023, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) advised and released details about the upcoming 230th Anniversary of the Flowing Hair Silver Dollar that is planned to be struck in both 24K Gold and .999 Fine Silver in late Fall 2024. The 24K Gold Flowing Hair Coin (24YG) is set to have $1 USD Face Value, being struck in High Relief as many of the previous 24K Gold coins released by the mint have been. The gold version being struck is sure to be a great hit in the land of numismatics, as the flowing hair dollar design is one of the timeless pieces of Americana. However, not the same can be said for the Silver Medal (24YH) which has disappointed collectors because it is just a medal and not a coin. Here are some exciting details about the 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin (24YG):
EDIT: September 16th (Re-Edit October 21st)
The release is rumored to be just after the October 15th, Silver Medal release. There is said to be no presales for ABPP, or Numismatic Bulk programs, which makes this release that much tougher to get (this has since been lifted). The Retail Price has increased due to the large spike in recent gold prices.
EDIT: September 26th
The release date has been set for November 14, 2024, at Noon EST, Household Limit has now been changed to 1 coin.
There are rumors of a gold privy being circulated around, but no confirmation of such yet.
EDIT: October 7th
Confirmed Mintage: 17,500 Units.
EDIT: November 6th
The US Mint launched details about the images of the new flowing hair 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin (24YG) and a Privy Mark has been officially revealed. Here are the images of the new coin, including the coin with the box and papers.
The 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin (24YG) will come with the standard box and paper line up that the silver medal came with, with an added gold COA touch that compliments the coin perfectly. Here are some official images:
Now what you've all been waiting for... The 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin with "230" Privy Mark (24YG). The mint initially released the images on November 6th and took them down shortly after. They are 100% confirmed images, but we do not know if these coins will be released as apart of their initial launch of the coin. They will likely be apart of the first 10 coins auctioned as in the guidelines of the original press release.
This is incredible to see the design and detail put into the 230 privy mark and will be a lasting legacy as this coin will likely have an incredibly small mintage. Think back to the V75 Privy Mark - a mere mintage of 1945 coins, selling out in less than 5 minutes and commanding over $15k on the secondary markets today. This is sure to be a hit with all collectors.
Nov 7th: "As a tribute to the number of years that have elapsed since the Flowing Hair dollar coin was introduced, the Mint will also auction 230 one ounce, high relief, 24-karat gold coins with a “230” privy mark on December 12, 2024. The first coin will be auctioned with the die in a custom-made display box. Each of the coins will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity hand-signed by the Honorable Ventris C. Gibson, Director of the United States Mint. Additional details about this special auction will be released at a later date."
New Details and Design
The 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin (24YG) will feature the original 1794 Flowing Hair Design with a lettered edge that includes the face value and motto. This is like the original design which has the face value set on the edge as well, a striking move in the 18th century.
The coin according to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) will hold a face value of $1 USD (EDIT: This is not confirmed yet), instead of $100 USD since the series of the flowing hair was removed from the American Liberty High Relief series at the beginning of the year. Originally, the release was delayed but has since been put back on for Fall 2024, we should expect the release to follow shortly after the October 15th medal release. Edit: The release will take place November 14, 2024.
The Original 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar
The original design of the 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin (24YG) comes from one of the first coins minted by the US Mint, the Flowing Hair Silver Dollar. Recently, a SP-66 CAC version of the 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar sold for over $10.01 Million Dollars at a Stacks Bowers auction, the most expensive coin to ever sell until the 1933 Saint Gaudens auction a couple of years later. These results highlight the importance of this design to valued collectors of American Numismatics.
Price Point and Mintage
The price of the 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin (24YG) will be in accordance with the price schedule set by the United States Mint for their bullion and numismatics products during the year. To give you an idea of the price points for prior coins, they typically commanded 25%-30% over gold spot, which in today's current market of $2,340.00 USD per troy ounce, would set the retail price of the release at just around $3,000.00 USD per coin. Coins should come in standard US Mint packaging with a nice inner and outer box along with a COA. The US Mint has set a household limit of 5 coins, which will be lifted after 24 hours if not sold out.
EDIT: With gold spot now over $2,700.00 per ounce, the retail will effectively be in the range of $3,620.00-$3,780.00 per coin.
The mintage of the 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Gold Coin (24YG) is not yet known, but prior American Liberty High Relief Series have seen mintages at 13,000 for the 2023 High Relief, and prior in the year the Liberty Britannia High Relief Gold Coin capped out at just 5,500 pieces minted, the rarest in modern times.
Expect a similarly sized product limit to be issued between 15,000 and 25,000 units due to the popularity of the design. Confirmed mintage is 17,500 Units.
